Hello 4B Families,

I hope you all had a nice weekend. We have a great week of learning ahead. Students should check Seesaw for reminders from me about unfinished work. They should also always check back to previous submissions for any comments/requests I have made. Sometimes pictures are unclear, or cut off—sometimes I would ask students to make corrections or add detail. The final weeks of school are always more challenging–as students are looking forward to summer. With distance learning, even more challenges arise. Thank you for your support in keeping your children attentive and organized with their studies. Remember, please do not hesitate to contact me for support in any way. I am happy to meet with students—and families.

Field Day: This Friday, May 22nd is Field Day! Students are encouraged to participate by wearing their class colors. Our class colors are rainbow/tie dye. There will be no academic assignments on Friday. We want students to be able to get outside and enjoy Field Day! All of the information and directions for the field day activities will be posted later this week.

Science: Science is back this week with more brain busters! Students will be asked to take a short quiz about the brain and its functions. This quiz will be assigned Monday and due on Seesaw by Wednesday. On Thursday, all students will have a science-themed zoom meeting to discuss the final science project: Preventing Brain Injuries. Students will create a 2-3 minute podcast or video to raise awareness about brain injuries and concussions. All information will be posted in Google Classroom on Thursday.

Spelling: Students will have 2 weeks to practice the next set of spelling words: Plurals We will have a zoom meeting to discuss the rules of plurals as well. Activities should be completed in Spelling City by Friday, May 29th, and the spelling and vocabulary tests will take place on Spelling City that day.

Language Arts:  The students should start working on their final drafts once I have edited their rough drafts. They should be sure to read my comments and suggestions and add/revise as needed.  Final copies should be completed on May 26th. We will share our stories on Zoom.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Social Studies:  The students should continue to review for the WA Map Features test on June 2nd.  They can use both the maps I sent home I the packets and the online practice site.  The lessons we will cover to wrap our year will focus on early Washington history with a focus on the Seattle area.  The students will be using the packet that was included in the folder you recently picked up.  The cover says, “Washington the Early Years”.  I will go over how we will do these lessons in the Zoom meeting on Monday.  For the next two weeks the students will watch videos I make going over the information (and adding some extra fun facts).  After watching each video, the students will take a short quiz on Google Classroom (10 questions or less). Most of the answers will be in the packet, but there will be one or two questions for each test that the students will only know the answer to if they watch the videos. The first video will be posted on Tuesday–about the Denny Party. The test will be open on Tuesday as well.  Students should take the tests shortly after watching the videos.

Here is the schedule for the videos.  Tests will be posted the same day the videos come out.  Students will have several days to complete each video/test.

• May 19th; The Denny Party.  This video and test should be completed by May 21st.
• May 21st: Mother Joseph.  This video/test should be completed by May 27th.
• May 28th: The Early Years of Seattle.  This video/test should be completed by June 2nd
• During the June 2nd Zoom meeting Ms. Simpson will be doing a live lesson about the Great Seattle Fire.  There will be a video available as well.  The final quiz for the Great Seattle Fire should be completed by June 5th.

Math: Students will have a test on Operations with Fractions on Thursday of this week. Looking ahead, we will be covering a multitude of topics from different chapters that will cover the essential standards needed for fifth grade. First up…decimals!

Reading…A message from Ms. Corrigan: Hi everyone! I’m really impressed with how well the students are doing as a whole with our Mixed Up Files novel unit! We will continue to work on daily lessons all the way until the end of the school year. We will complete 1-2 chapters per week, which will be perfect timing. With each chapter, students will continue to be expected to read some on their own and some with me (virtually), complete a written response worksheet, practice fluency and take a quiz. Here are some tips for the greatest success:

√ Watch our daily video lessons 

√ Please make sure you are completing the written assignments carefully and with detail 

√ Please complete the assigned fluency work and post on Seesaw. 

√ Check back on Seesaw a few times a week and see the comments I’ve made on your work 

√ Take the Chapter quizzes when assigned. 

√ Keep up on daily independent reading (20 minutes per day).
