Newsletter Week of February 22nd

Dear 4B Families,

I hope you all had a great weekend. It was crazy to have everything be completely snow-free after our big snow just a week ago!

Outreach: All students are asked to bring in ten dollars (or more!) for Uganda during Lent. This money goes directly to our partner school in Uganda for student tuition, clothes, materials, and other necessities. In addition, each family received a Rice Bowl. You can return those to school at any time. Thank you for supporting our Lenten Outreach Programs. The spirit of giving is alive and well in 4th grade!

Asynchronous Fridays: This is a friendly reminder that Fridays, although asynchronous, are essential school days for all students. The work assigned on Fridays will be continuing work from the week. It is important that students complete all the work on Fridays in order to keep up with class work. Typically, assignments, including the PE and Music videos, will take less than the full day to complete. Please check in with your child and look over the Daily Checklist on Fridays to ensure that they are completing assignments. Thank you for your support!

Headphones: All students need to have headphones at school.  Over the ear headphones are preferable.  We will be doing activities that require the use of headphones regularly, and they must have headphones for music classes on Tuesdays.

Comfort Kits:  Just a reminder that all students attending school in-person need to have comfort kits.  If you have not yet turned in your comfort kits, please do so right away.

Girls on the Run!: This spring, we are so excited to offer Girls on the Run to all 4th grade girls! Girls on the Run is a program just for girls that focuses on learning social skills, building self-confidence, and promoting healthy habits for mind and body. Ms. McNerney and Ms. Benson will coach this season, and we are going to pay special attention to the safety of all girls. The program will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school until 4:30, and it will start on Tuesday, March 30th. If you’d like to register, you can do so here. If you have questions, please contact Ms. Benson at kbenson@holyrosaryws.org, watch our short video HERE, or visit the Girls on the Run website here. Finally, you can find more detailed information about our Holy Rosary site here. We can’t wait to see you at Girls on the Run!

Science: This week, we will start a brand new Mystery Science Unit called “The Birth of Rocks.” The first question we will explore is, Could a volcano pop up where you live? This exciting unit will explore patterns of volcanic action throughout the world, past and present.

Social Studies:  The big 50 State test will be this Thursday, February 25th.  I will provide a list of all of the states, and the students will have a box with all the abbreviations, but they will not be matched to a state.  We will also get back on the trail with Lewis and Clark, heading over the Rocky Mountains.

Math: We are continuing to practice long division this week. We are thinking critically about interpreting quotients and remainders, and we will also start dividing larger numbers. It is imperative that students continue daily fact practice. Each student is expected to do one Xtra Math lesson in school, and additional practice at home is very helpful for students who have not yet mastered all facts. We are building confidence with this difficult skill, and I am proud of all the fourth graders! Starting this week, students will be getting a short homework assignment on Monday and Wednesday nights. Please look over your child’s homework on these nights. Thank you!

Religion/LA:  The students will be tested on the Seven Sacraments and their categories on Wednesday the 24th.  In class we will review, and the students will have a chance to quiz each other.  The spelling of the sacraments does not have to be perfect, but should be reasonable. Students should be able to pronounce each sacrament correctly if I ask them.  Because we have both the Sacrament and 50 state tests this week, there will not be a spelling test this week.  Look for the next spelling list to come home with the Roomers on Thursday, and the Zoomers in the Fridaypick up.  This spelling test will take place on Thursday, March 4th. All students have been given purple copies of the Memorare.  I put two on each sheet so the students can cut them in half and keep one by their bed to say each night before they go to sleep, and a second copy to post for extra practice. Please note, in class the students are learning what the prayer means!

Oral Biographies: Just an FYI, we will be introducing the Oral Biography Project the week of March 1st.  This is a fun and exciting project.  We will give full directions and expectations when the directions are given.  Stay tuned!

Here are a few of the Valentine’s Day boxes. I was so impressed with everyone’s work!
