Dear 4B Families,

Happy second week of Advent. I hope you all had a nice weekend. Report cards will be emailed this Friday. Please let me know if you have any questions about them. Thank you! It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

This Friday students will enjoy a free dress comfy cozy day.  Come to school in your coziest clothes or PJ’s!

Advent Outreach: As you know, the 4th grade students are collecting for St. Vincent DePaul. The following are some of the most needed items currently:

• Hearty Soups/Chili
• Cranberry Sauce
• Canned Pumpkin
• Stovetop Dressing
• Peanut butter (16oz)
• Canned chicken
• Canned fruit
• Cereal, Crackers

All donations should be brought to school. We will have a box available in which items will be placed. Please consider helping your child “earn” their donation. They could do some chores around the house, rake leaves for a neighbor, or anything at all! In addition, the students wrote notes of encouragement during class that they can tape onto the items. If they haven’t yet written a note, please remind your child. Also, make sure that your child’s name is NOT on the note. Thank you all for your generosity.

We will also be collecting cash donations to purchase gift cards as part of the local parish giving tree.  Gift cards will support families of Saint Vincent de Paul (families receiving food from our food pantry) and Catholic Legal Immigration Services (primarily refugees setting up new homes as they are resettled in the Puget Sound area). If each student would be able to donate one or two dollars, we will use the money to purchase gift cards.  All donations need to be collected by December 14th so we can purchase the gift cards and have them to school by the 15th.

Reading: We are getting ready to wrap up our in-depth study of Charlotte’s Web. We will send home a vocabulary review sheet with students on Monday. Students should study the vocabulary words to get ready for the test next week. Students will also be assessed on their comprehension skills in the form of a multiple choice/written response test and a quote test.

At home, it is extremely important that students read every day. This will help their reading growth as well as develop a joy for reading. Thank you for your support in this area!

Language Arts: The students are busy working on their Reindeer stories this week!  They are crafting creative paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting details and wrap up sentences.  

Spelling: The spelling words this week all have final “le”.  The test will take place Friday, December 10th.

Math: We are wrapping up chapter 4 this week with a test on Tuesday. Students are working on communicating different strategies to solve multiplication problems. Please continue to practice multiplication facts at home with XtraMath or any other method that works for you! Also, please continue to check over your child’s math homework and reinforce the habit of striving for accuracy. Thank you!

Social Studies: The Midwest State test will take place this Monday, December 13th. Students need to know both the locations and abbreviations.  

Religion: Our religion lessons are focusing on the Season of Advent and the Corporal Works of Mercy. The students are creating posters that teach about the meaning of each Work of Mercy. The students will be tested on memorization the the seven Corporal Works of Mercy this Friday, December 10th.  Spelling does not have to be perfect, but students will receive extra credit for correct spelling.

Science: Students will start presenting their podcast/video projects this week. They are teaching other kids their age all about concussions. I’ve been impressed with the students’ creativity with this project!
