Newsletter Week of May 10th

Dear 4B Families,

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the wonderful 4th grade Moms! We hope you enjoyed reading the special cards that the students created last week.

This is going to be an exciting week full of Oral Biography Presentations! I’m so excited to see all of the students’ hard work come to life! Bravo to all of our performers from last week: Ella, Seeley, Bren, and Griff. You were fantastic! It looks like we will also continue with our warm and sunny weather streak. What a beautiful Spring it has been!

Picture Day: This Tuesday, May 11th, we will be taking class group pictures. All students need to come in perfect uniform (including a red sweatshirt, sweater or vest for the picture. Students will wear masks and be social distanced during the photo session. (Look below for a “class picture” we took on zoom last Friday!)

Girls on the Run: Our site-based 5K is fast-approaching! The Holy Rosary Team will have our site-based 5K on Thursday, May 20th during the normal practice time. Register as a Running Buddy by May 9th at 11:59pm HERE. All girls will need a Running Buddy to run/walk through the course with them. Coaches will be at the finish line to present the girls with their finisher’s medal and take pictures. This is a wonderful event, and we are so excited to be able to have it at our site this year! For more information, please contact Ms. Benson or Ms. McNerney.

School T-Shirts: Last week you received information about a t-shirt order we are making for the entire school!  If you have not done so already, please fill out the form to order by clicking the link below.

Shirts are being ordered, for the entire school, to commemorate this year!  We need your help.  Please indicate your child’s name, homeroom teacher and size (YXS-AXL) on this spreadsheet. If we do NOT see your child’s names on the list, then the below sizes will be ordered for each grade.  Shirts are 50/50 and pre-shrunk. Sizes must be updated no later than Tuesday, May 11th at noon.

3s/PK – Youth XS

K/1 – Youth Small

2/3- Youth Medium

4/5 – Youth Large

6 – Youth XL

7 – Adult Small

8 – Adult Medium

Math: Last week, we wrapped up our Fractions chapter. All students worked very hard, and they should be proud of themselves! Check your child’s filer (or Seesaw for Zoomers) for their corrected chapter 9 math tests. Our next chapter is all about fractions and decimals. We will have limited math time this week due to oral biography presentations. Due to this, there will be no math homework this week. Students should use the time to practice for their oral biographies.

Science: Last week, we wrapped up our unit on sound by experimenting with an oscilloscope. Students got to make different sounds to see what their graphs look like. Students also predicted sounds based on oscilloscope graphs. They are sound experts! This week, we are switching gears and starting a unit on Energy. Students will make an amusement park ride called the Twist-o-matic and explore different ways to make it move on its own. There have been many graded classwork assignments and assessments in science so far this trimester, so make sure you check your child’s filer weekly to see how they are doing.

Reading: We are moving right along with From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. Students are loving this classic novel! Our reading focus will be on understanding new vocabulary, making inferences about the text, and listening for details when reading. This is a rich novel full of nuances and interesting information, and students are doing a great job of reading and understanding it.

Language Arts:  Oral biographies are a big part of LA this week of course.  There will be the spelling test on Thursday—contractions.  As you review with your children, ask them things like, “What two words make up she’ll? (she will).  We will have daily spelling reviews in class as well.

Religion: We are wrapping up our year focusing on two main topics (The Beatitudes and Catholic Social Teaching). These two topics work very well together, as they both teach us and challenge us to live our lives in the service of others, and follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Students will learn that true, lasting happiness is rooted in our positive relationships with one another, and living God’s Law of Love.

Social Studies: The students should be reviewing for the May 26th WA Map feature test. All students have a large study map, and there are two online practice sites the students can use to review linked in the Map Study Sheets page at the top of the website. Our class work will continue with the Denny Party and the amazing Mother Joseph!

Have a great week!

Ms. Benson
