Newsletter for the week of April 15-19

Dear 4th Grade Families,

The BINGO Bash was great fun last Friday!

Oral Biography Presentations:  You should receive a google doc to sign your child up for a time to give their presentation about the same time as the newsletter email was sent. This Tuesday (maybe Wednesday) we will be giving class time for the students to do some work in class on their oral biographies. We will take some time to discuss ideas for Brilliant Beginnings and strong conclusions as well, along with showing parts of some past presentations.  Students should bring their materials, sticky notes, note cards and books to school on Tuesday this week as we will also be making our bibliographies.

Just a reminder that the 4th grade classes have been assigned to bring in Lunches of Love in April.  We are asking every student to bring in at least one lunch this month.  Thank you.

Flat Stanley Journals: Hopefully the Flat People had some fun adventures over spring break.  At home the students will be writing a minimum of three entries in their journals.  Thank you for helping your child edit, remembering to include figurative language, great word choice, topic and closing sentences.  The writing in the journal should be final draft quality.  Pictures should be included with the entries.  The picture shows the preferred layout of the picture on the back of the previous entry so that you can look at the pictures while reading the corresponding entry.  Let me know if you have any questions, or need help printing pictures.

Spelling:  This week’s words all have silent consonants.  The test will be Friday as usual.

Math: On Monday and Tuesday this week we will review for our chapter 8 test on Fractions.  The Monday/Tuesday homework will also be test reviews.  The test will be on Wednesday.  We will then move into chapter 9, Operations with Fractions—beginning with adding and subtracting.

Reading: This week, students continue reading From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. We search for clues, discover key examples of figurative language and discuss the many details of the chapters that bring the plot and setting to life.

Religion:  We will wrap up our work with the Ten Commandments this week and then begin our next unit on The Beatitudes—understanding what makes us truly happy in life–will be our religion focus.  The students will learn about each Beatitude and how they apply in our daily lives.

Science: This week we will have the Unit 3 Human Machine test on April 18th. We will then be starting Unit 4: Energizing Everything! In the first lesson, students learn that we use the energy from food to make our bodies move just like cars use the energy from gasoline to move. In the activity, Twist-o-matic Tester, students build paper models of an amusement park ride called the Twist-o-Matic. The ride stores energy in rubber bands and spins around when the energy is released. Students compare the speed of the spins when they use a thin rubber band versus a thick rubber band.

Social Studies: After we learn about the Denny Party we will be focusing on the Regions of Washington State.  We will learn about the features, populations and industries of each region.
