Dear 4B Families,
I hope you are all enjoying the long weekend in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We have a short but exciting week of learning ahead. If you signed up to drive/chaperone our field trip to deliver certificates on January 27th you should have received an email from me last week with some information about the event. Thank you!
Catholic Schools Week: We will be honoring some of our support staff during Catholic Schools Week. If you could send in a few dollars we can get them a gift along with a thank you card to show appreciation! Thank you for your generosity!
Religion: The students will finish up their Works of Mercy posters this week along with group presentations to the class.
Students will bring home directions for our special Valentine box project this week. Students should complete and bring in their Valentine boxes to school on Thursday the 12th so they can share their boxes with the class. There are some specific requirements for the boxes, so be sure your child tells you all about it! I can’t wait to see what the creative 4th grade students come up with! Students will be provided with a class list they can use to write their Valentines. All students are expected to bring in valentines for each of their classmates.
Language Arts: As the students complete their Cool School News articles, they will prepare to present them to the class with strong voice projection, expression and personality. We will have our own Holy Rosary Newsroom, with 26 roving reporters! The students are also creating a self portrait poster with a quote by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. that inspires them. These posters will be used to help decorate our hallway for the Catholic Schools Week open house.
Spelling: The spelling words for this week all focus on words with /j/ sound most ending ending with the letters “ge” All students received a spelling list last Friday that should be in their filer. We will also be completing our class spelling bee to determine the two students that will represent 4A in the school spelling bee.
Reading: This week students will continue to read Charlotte’s Web focusing on chapters 19-22! We will finish up the amazing story this week and prepare the students for the final tests the following week. There is a vocabulary test and a comprehension/written response test.
Math: We are continuing to practice multi-digit multiplication. Your support at home checking your child’s homework with them is very important. We encourage you to have your child complete one or two problems then have them checked for accuracy. In this way, if they are making errors with the algorithm they do not complete the entire page with the same errors. We will be finishing up this chapter this week, with a planned test on Wednesday the 28th. Note, students that have not yet mastered their math facts for automatic recall are expected to practice for 5-10 minutes nightly either with Xtramath or flashcards. Knowing the facts is a priority. On Tuesday the 20th students will be taking the Math MAP test.
Social Studies: The students do have a new set of states to begin practicing, the West/SW. All students have a filled out practice sheet and a blank one to use to study. The test will take place Thursday February 5th. For this test students will need to learn the abbreviations for the SW/West states. You can access extra practice sheets and the links for online review sites in the “Map Study Sheet” tab at the top of the 4A Webpage. Looking ahead, the 50 State test will take place February 19th.
Science: This week in lesson 3, we will be exploring the role that air plays in enabling a sound vibration to travel. In the activity, Act Out a Sound, students do two short activities that explore sound vibrations. Students experiment with sound to understand how it moves through the air and then consider what would happen in an environment like space where there is no air.
