Dear 4B Parents,
I hope you all enjoyed the last weekend of April! May is almost here—and it will be a busy and exciting month in 4th grade!
May Crowning: On Wednesday we will have Mass at 8:45. We will be honoring Mary at the May Crowning. If each student could bring in one flower on Wednesday to add to a vase of flowers we will bring forward during the Mass that would be wonderful. Students should be in perfect uniform. Join us if you are able.
I hope the students are enjoying taking pictures with their flat person and thinking of creative entries. It is important that they plan to work in their journals each week. I have been limiting homework on some nights just for this purpose. Please let me know if you need any support, or if you would like me to print off any pictures here at school.
- All entries need to have a clear topic sentence and a minimum of three to five supporting details (sentences) as well as a strong conclusion.
- Every entry needs to use figurative language (simile, metaphor, hyperbole, etc.)
- Spelling and punctuation should be accurate.
- Titles should be properly capitalized on both the entry page and the table of contents.
- Every entry needs a picture. If you do not have a picture with the Flat Person that is ok. You can include ticket stubs, brochures, a picture of the place from an online photo, or even draw a picutre.
Remember, our 4th Grade Bake Sale takes place on Thursday, May 17th. Our bake sale cannot take place without our wonderful parent volunteers to assist with set-up, monitoring/helping students with service and sales and clean up. Volunteers are needed between 10:00-1:00. Please email me if you are able to assist, and thank you to those that have already indicated they can help.
Look for permission slips for our final field trip of the year to the Underground Tour and Alki Beach in your child’s filer. They are on a goldenrod colored sheet and were passed out last Friday. Please return the permission slips by this Friday the 4th. Thank you.
Spelling: Words for Lesson 26 were sent out last Friday. The test will be this Friday as usual.
Mystery Book: Students should be reading their mystery books as part of homework. I also encourage students to have their books at school as there are often times during the day when they can read. As they read students should be marking pages with important clues as this will help them when they plan their talk to the class.
Science: Last week we looked at the different properties of materials that we might use as insulation for our solar ovens. We discussed such properties as: durability, flexibility, and weight. We also had a lab where we tested the temperature loss of each material. This week we are going to analyze the class data from our lab and look at the environmental impacts of each material. This will help us make better decisions when choosing which materials to use as insulation in our solar ovens.
Social Studies: Washington Mountain and River Test:The test will take place next Thursday, May 10th. All students have astudy sheetwith one blank side to help with review. There is also an online site to reviewfor this test. There will be a word bank for the test. After wrapping up our Oregon Trail work we will be focusing on the early settlers to Washington State with a focus on the Seattle area.
Math: This week we will focus on subtraction and multiplication of fractions. Look for math homework most nights.
Religion: Look for corrected religion tests in your child’s filer. Our next unit of study will focus on the Beatitudesand what makes us truly happy. The students will learn how the words from the Sermon on the Mount apply in our daily lives. Our Second Steplessons this week will look at ways to handle put-downs. Unfortunately, popular media often portray insults and put-downs as humorous. Students will be asked to think critically about what makes something funny or not and analyze whether comedy should really be at the expense of others. Please note, our school policy is that put-downs are not okay and not allowed at school. Students will practice using assertive responses to put-downs. As a family you can also talk about the messages that are on televsion shows and other media sources that involve putting others down. For homework this week you will be asked to work with your child to be “detectives” that catch people giving “put-ups”. This homework sheet will come home on Tuesday and be due next Monday the 7th. Our religion focus on the Beatitudes is a perfect compliment to our Second Step topic this week.
