I hope you all enjoyed the President’s Day Weekend. I was so impressed with the amazing Valentine Box Projects! Thank you so much for the lovely Valentine cards and gifts. They are so appreciated!
The time has come to start planning for the big Oral Biography Project.
The first step is to pick a biography to read. The final biography choice and book needs to be approved by your teacher no later than March 5th. The person they choose should be an historical figure who has made positive contributions to society and/or shown exceptional courage or perseverance in the face of adversity. Generally choices should be people whose contributions have been known for 50 or more years rather than current figures. If they have had older sibling who has done the oral biography project, this is a change from previous requirements. Your child will need to be able to find an appropriate book and enough quality and approved information on that person to prepare your presentation. They may not choose: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Lewis, Clark, Sacagawea or your Saint. Students should have a back-up choice as we prefer not to have duplicates. Presentations will be made from April 23rd-May 1st. We will determine the actual day students will be assigned to present as the time draws near. All students will come home with a “Big Bio Proposal” sheet to fill out and return by this Thursday the 26th. This is just an initial request that will need to be approved. Then you can move forward with the actual project once approved.
The Season of Lent: On the 18th, we celebrated Ash Wednesday. Students received ashes on their forehead as a symbol of repentance. During Lent we will be covering the importance of praying, fasting, and giving alms.
During Lent, one of the pillars we focus is on almsgiving. This means that we strive to intentionally focus on serving others in need during this Lenten time. As a school we will do two things to focus on serving those in need during Lent. First, we will take up a special collection on five Fridays during Lent to support Prepares and Annunciation School in Minnesota. On these Fridays in Lent (2/20, 2/27, 3/6, 3/13, and 3/20) students may come to school in free dress if they bring in a donation (minimum $1) to support this important need. We strongly encourage students to earn $1 each week doing some act of service around their home. This way they will connect their own service to their almsgiving. Students may come in uniform on these days if they choose not to participate, and please no free dress passes these Fridays.
Second, we will continue our tradition of supporting a local men’s shelter in Seattle, St. Martin de Porres. We will take up collections as follows (optional as well, but encourage participation if possible). We will deliver the donations from our school to St. Martins each of these Fridays.

Finally, though not a school collection, you may participate in Operation Rice Bowl. Each family should have received one rice bowl and those can be returned to school during Holy Week. Please do not write your family name on the box. Thank you for being a partner in serving others during this Lenten time.
LA/Spelling: There will be a spelling test on Friday the 27th this week. This week’s words are all compound words. The students will be continuing to work on their mini bios and starting to fill out the posters which include a short summary, illustrations, and fun facts.
Religion: We have lots going on in religion! We continue to learn about the Sacraments as well as focusing on Lent. March 3rd the students will be tested on the names and categories of the Sacraments. The students reflected on Prayer/ Fasting and Almsgiving last week. The students will be using their Bibles regularly during Lent to look up and reflect on readings related to the season. We will be practicing the Memorare daily at school. Students should also keep a copy by their bed and say it each night before they go to sleep. The Memorare should be recited in class before Easter break, no later than April 2nd.
Reading: We are starting a new unit in reading that is focused on the ways advances in science can be helpful and harmful with the food we eat! The main text story is called, A New Kind of Corn. This story is an argumentative text and students will also be learning about how the author is persuading the readers on this topic. Organic food and GMO’s are also discussed.
Math: Keep up regular multiplication and especially division fact practice. Thank you for your continued assistance helping your children work for accuracy on their homework as we work to master the long division algorithm. Our class lessons will remain focused on long division and interpreting remainders in story problems.
Science: We have wrapped up the Waves of Sound Unit. Students have a completed study guide in their science section. We will be reviewing in class and doing Kahoots to study as well. The test will be on February 27th.
Social Studies: Look for corrected 50 State tests in your child’s filer. The students did so well! The students will continue their travels with Lewis and Clark, learning about the importance of Sacagawea to the expedition’s success.
