Dear 4B Families,
Catholic Schools Week was a wonderful celebration. Thank you to all of the parents that drove a group of students to deliver certificates to our local businesses. I have already seen some of them hanging up! Thank you also for the lovely flowers and kind cards. I appreciate your thoughtfulness.
Thank you also for your generous donations to our collection for Mr. Tuttle, Sergio, Ms. Beyer, and Mrs. Earl. We were able to get gift cards for each of them.
Congratulations to the 4th grade Spelling Bee participants, Mable Frazier, Olive Flatt and Phoebe Lincicum and the 1-4 Spelling Bee winner, Wyatt Haddock! All of the students did such a great job.
Mid-tri reports: Mid-tri reports will come home this Thursday, February 5th in an envelope that will be in your child’s filer. Please keep the report, but sign and return the envelope. Thank you so much.
Students should bring their Valentine boxes to school on February 12th. Students can bring their valentines on February 13th. The students will share their Valentine Box creations with the class. I can’t wait to see what the creative 4th grade students come up with! All students will be provided with a class list on Monday they can use to write their Valentines.
Religion: The Liturgical Year Test will take place on Thursday the 19th. Remember, this is a two part test. The students will fill in a liturgical calendar with a provided word list. They will also need to know the colors of the seasons. The second part of the test includes specific questions about the calendar and seasons. All students have a packet with study sheets for both parts of the test and they also can review for both tests with the online practice sites you will find under the RELIGION tab at the top of the website. You will also find extra study sheets there. We will practice/review in class as well. Our next unit will be focusing on The Seven Sacraments.
Math: This week we move into our unit on long division. We will begin with some basic review of division rules, dividing multiples of 10, 100 and 1,000, estimating quotients, and modeling remainders before we teach the algorithm for long division. Thank you for checking over your child’s homework with them. All students will be moved to division on Xtramath to reinforce our lessons.
Reading: This week we will switch back to our Wonders book, starting with the story, Delivering Justice by Jim Haskins. We are focusing on learning about biographies which will segway into the mini bio project that is coming up. Students will be learning the importance of speaking up and fighting for their rights.
Language Arts: This week we will begin a smaller writing project (called Mini-Bio) that will lead us into the larger upcoming Oral Biography project. At school each student will receive a mini biography to read. They will be writing a summary of this person’s life, character traits, what they admire and some fun facts to teach about their subject. When they present this project the students will get some practice for the big bio as well, speaking in front of the class as the person they wrote about. You can expect to hear more about the big Oral Biography Project after winter break.
Spelling: Because of the short week the spelling test will take place on Tuesday, February 10th. Students received their new list last Friday. The following spelling test will take place Friday, February 20th.
Science: In the third lesson, students explore the role that air plays in enabling a sound vibration to travel. In the activity, Act Out a Sound, students do two short activities that explore sound vibrations. Students experiment with sound to understand how it moves through the air and then consider what would happen in an environment like space where there is no air.
Social Studies: he students should be ready for the West/SW this Thursday, February 5th. You can access extra practice sheets and the links for online review sites in the “Map Study Sheet” tab at the side of the 4A Webpage. Looking ahead, the 50 State test will take place February 20th. All students will receive a study packet this Thursday that will be in their filer. I will give the students time during their SS class to practice, but they should plan on practicing at home as well to solidify the locations. Remember, I will provide a list of abbreviations for the students to use for this test. Our class studies will focus on the Lewis and Clark Expedition!
