Dear 4B Families,
I hope you all had a great weekend. The talent show last Friday was great fun. Such talented and creative students—especially all of our 4B participants!—-and supportive audience members!
We will be wrapping up our MAP testing this week, finishing up any unfinished sections. On Thursday the students will be taking the 5th grade math placement test. This test is one of three considerations we use to determine math placements in 5th grade. We also look at MAP test scores and classroom performance/progress.
Field day is THIS FRIDAY May 22nd. We are so excited to get to return to Hiawatha this year! 4B’s colors on Friday will be any combination of black and white. Please send a water bottle with your child. Goldfish will be provided as a snack. If your child cannot eat goldfish, please send an appropriate healthy snack. REMEMBER that Friday is also a NOON dismissal day. Enjoy your Memorial Day Weekend!
Religion: We will be continuing to work on our Beatitude Booklets by adding illustrations and bibles chapter/verse to each section. Students challenge themselves to name all eight beatitudes.
Math: We are continuing to work on chapter 10 which covers fractions and decimals. Focusing mainly on place value, modeling decimals and fractions, and comparing decimals. Look for math homework Monday, Wednesday and Thursday this week.
Reading: Our next story is called Energy Island written by Allan Drummond. This story is about how a community uses renewable energy resources. The essential question focuses on how our energy resources have changed over the years. We will be discussing nonrenewable and renewable energy and understanding new vocabulary that connects with the story.
Flat Stanley Project: Journals are due this Tuesday the 19th. At school the students will be creating a final wrap up entry. This is a separately graded piece. The students will be given specific directions for the writing and complete the work on own—editing and proofreading their work themselves.
Spelling: The spelling test this week will be on Thursday. The spelling lists were passed out last Thursday and should be in your child’s filer.
Science: We are starting our last unit, Energizing Everything. In the first lesson, students learn that we use the energy from food to make our bodies move just like cars use the energy from gasoline to move. In the activity, Twist-o-matic Tester, students build paper models of an amusement park ride called the Twist-o-Matic. The ride stores energy in rubber bands and spins around when the energy is released. Students compare the speed of the spins when they use a thin rubber band versus a thick rubber band.
Social Studies: The––Washington State Features takes place Friday, May 29th. This test also has an online practice site students can use to review as well. The students will have a word bank for the test.
