Dear 4B Families,
I hope you are all enjoying the long weekend in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We have a short but exciting week of learning ahead. If you signed up to drive/chaperone our field trip to deliver certificates on January 28th you will receive an email from me later this week with some information about the event. Thank you!
Religion: The students will finish up their Works of Mercy posters this week and prepare for their classroom presentations. Our next area of study in religion will be the Liturgical Year. The students will be able to fill in a Liturgical calendar with the seasons and major holy days as well as understand the meaning and focus of each season. Last week the students came home with a liturgical calendar study sheet. The test will take place February 4th. This online practice site can also be used to prepare for the test.
Students will bring home directions for our special Valentine box project this week. Students should complete and bring in their Valentine boxes to school on Thursday, February 13th. The students will share their Valentine Box creations with the class. I can’t wait to see what the creative 4th grade students come up with! All students will be provided with a class list on Monday they can use to write their Valentines. All students are expected to bring in valentines for each of their classmates.
Language Arts: As the students complete their Cool School News articles, they will prepare to present them to the class with strong voice projection, expression and personality. We will have our own Holy Rosary Newsroom, with 26 roving reporters! The students are also creating a self portrait poster with a quote by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. that inspires them.
Spelling: The spelling words this week focus on words with more letters than sounds. All students received a spelling list last Friday that should be in their filer.
Reading: This week students will continue to read a biography of Cesar Chavez: “Harvesting Hope.” Our target comprehension skills are: drawing conclusions and making generalizations about Chavez’ life, character traits and achievements. As a preview to the topic and vocabulary, the students will learn about the Dust Bowl and the challenges faced by farmers during these years. In addition, we will discuss Catholic Social Teaching: Dignity of Work and Rights of Workers. Students make connections between Chavez’ leadership and positive impact on workers’ rights and that of Dr. King’s accomplishments and influence on the Civil Rights’ Movement.
Math: We are continuing to practice multi-digit multiplication. Your support at home checking your child’s homework with them is very important. We encourage you to have your child complete one or two problems then have them checked for accuracy. In this way, if they are making errors with the algorithm they do not complete the entire page with the same errors. We will be finishing up this chapter with a planned test for this Friday, January 24th. Note, students that have not yet mastered their math facts for automatic recall are expected to practice for 5-10 minutes nightly either with Xtramath or flashcards. Knowing the facts is a priority. Check your child’s filer on Tuesday for our most current timed test.
Social Studies: The students do have a new set of states to begin practicing, the West/SW. All students have a filled out practice sheet and a blank one to use to study. The test will take place on January 24th. You can access extra practice sheets and the links for online review sites in the “Map Study Sheet” tab at the top of the 4A Webpage.
Science: This week, we will be finishing up the Waves of Sound unit and will have the Unit 2 test on February 7th. Students will be filling in a study guide to help support their learning as well as participating in a Kahoot.
