Dear 4B Families,
It was nice seeing many of you at the Open House on Sunday. We have a busy and fun week ahead with many special events that will help us celebrate our wonderful school, parish and community. The last part of the newsletter will review the events of the week and include special reminders for 4th grade in particular.
If you have signed up to take a group of students to deliver certificates on Tuesday, you should have received an email from me last Wednesday about the day and your responsibilities. I will send out a reminder Monday night as well. Thank you so much! Remember, Tuesday is a perfect uniform day. All students should wear a red Holy Rosary sweatshirt or sweater for deliveries–to represent our school! Thank you.
REMINDER OF THE REGULATIONS FOR STUDENTS RIDING IN CARS:
Effective January 1, 2020
- Children ages 4 and older and less than 4’9* tall must be secured in a booster seat with seat belt (or continue in harness seat).
- Children over height 4’9″ must be secured by a properly fitted seat belt (typically starting at 8-12 years old).
- Children under age 13 required to ride in the back seat when practical to do so
So, if your child is less than 4’9” please send them in with a booster seat on Tuesday. Thank you.
Homework: Be sure you are checking and clearing out your child’s filer of corrected tests and projects in the first Home/School section. Homework will be light this week. There will not be a spelling test. The next spelling test will be Thursday, February 6th Students will receive the new list this Wednesday. There may be a bit of math homework on Tuesday and Wednesday night. This week we will continue to focus on geometry skills which the students are really enjoying. Next week we move on to long division. The majority of the students have mastered, or nearly mastered their multiplication and division facts for automatic recall. Just a reminder, those students that are still working on this skill are expected to be practicing nightly! Mastery of the facts is an integral part of math success. Thank you for your continued diligence supporting your children with this critical skill.
Religion: This week the students will be sharing their Works of Mercy posters and we will spend time reviewing and learning more about the Liturgical Year. Just a reminder, the test will take place on Tuesday, February 4th. Online practice for both calendar and fact portions of the test can be accessed here.
Social Studies: Look for corrected West/SW tests. The complete 50 State Test will take place on Thursday, February 13th. Abbreviation lists will be available if students want them for the test. Students will need to be able to name and label the 5 Great Lakes from memory–spelling should be correct or at least very close. They will also label the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, Gulf of Mexico, Mexico and Canada. All students have a study/practice packet in their filer (or will on Monday if they were absent last Friday).
Science: We are finished with Unit 2: Waves of Sound. The test will be on February 13th. Students will be provided with a study guide that we will discuss and fill out in class along with a Kahoot to help them master the terms and concepts they have learned.
Because of the light homework this week, students are encouraged to get started on their Valentine Box Project that is due no later than Thursday, February 13th. Hard copies of the directions will be in your child’s filer on Monday, and you will also be able to access them on our website in the tabs above. This is a fun project—which includes design, math and engineering,—as well as time management. Be creative! We encourage creative reuse of items you already have.

There is a Book Fair during Catholic Schools Week!
We encourage parents to create ‘eWallets’ for their students to make shopping easier at the Book Fair. Directions will be sent home with a letter about the Book Fair. Please visit the website https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bf/holyrosaryschwseattle to sign up for the eWallet.
Sunday 26th:
Catholic Schools Week Liturgies and Open House on Sunday from 12:00-1:30pm. Students should wear uniforms to any Mass they attend this weekend.
Monday 27th:
Students may have free dress in Holy Rosary/Gator Gear/CYO apparel, no pajama bottoms please. Athletic wear (shorts, sweats along with Gator Gear ok) Yearbook photos for CYO will be taken on this day.
We will enjoy board game time the last hour of the day on Monday.
Parents, look for some special letters for you from your children later this week in your child’s filer. They are still working on them so we are not ready to send them off today–but they will be coming.
Tuesday 31st:
Today we reach out to others in thanks and service. Every class is doing some type of service today.
The 4th graders will begin their certificate delivery at 12:30. Be sure your child comes in uniform with a red HRS sweatshirt, sweater or jacket. Thank you. Congratulations to Ainsley who won the certificate design contest. All 10 of the entries were wonderful and each student received a special award for their participation.
Wednesday 1st:
Today we honor grandparents or special people in our lives. Be on the lookout for an email from the school with a lovely poem with each class reciting one line of the poem. You should forward this poem to the special people in your lives. The students will also bring home a decorated bag with a special gift that can be given to grandparents or special friends.
Thursday 2nd:
We will begin the day with the spelling bee. Congratulations to our class finalists Seamus and Evan. The class runner up is William. It was a very tight race, involving many rounds! Congrats to all and good luck to our 4B reps! This is a perfect uniform day. We celebrate our academic excellence. We will end the day with an All-School Read In. Students should have a book they love to read at school. 4th grade students may also bring in a pillow or stuffed animal on Thursday (not too big please) to cozy up with as they read if they choose.
Friday 3rd:
- Space Theme: Students can choose to dress in astronaut or alien themed costumes. We shared some ideas with the students in class. Have fun and be creative, while being respectful.
We have the always exciting spirit assembly in the morning at 9:00, and the crowd pleasing 8th grade vs. faculty volleyball game in the afternoon at 2:00.
