Dear 4B Families,
I hope you all had a great weekend. The talent show last Friday was great fun. Such talented and creative students—especially all of our 4B participants!—-and supportive audience members!
We will be wrapping up our MAP testing this week with our final test, Language Arts. Any make-ups needed will also be taken care of this week. On Tuesday the students will be taking the 5th grade math placement test. This test is one of three considerations we use to determine math placements in 5th grade. We also look at MAP test scores and classroom performance/progress.
Need a Parent Lead!
Holy Rosary School will be a sponsor for the 4th of July Kids’ Parade in North Admiral. Use the school pop-up tent and lead the Craft/Activity Table. Craft and activity can be decided by you or the school. Manage volunteers and the craft table, in charge of set-up and take down. Approximately a 5-6 hour time commitment – available for double hours due to the holiday! Email admissions@holyrosaryws.org
Field day is THIS FRIDAY May 24th. Because Hiawatha is still under construction we will be having our field day on campus this year. 4B’s colors on Friday will be any combination of pink and blue. Please send a water bottle with your child. Goldfish will be provided as a snack. If your child cannot eat goldfish, please send an appropriate healthy snack. REMEMBER that Friday is also a NOON dismissal day. Enjoy your Memorial Day Weekend!
Religion: We will be continuing to work on our Beatitude Booklets by adding illustrations and bibles chapter/verse to each section. Students challenge themselves to name all eight beatitudes.
Math: We are continuing to work on chapter 10 which covers fractions and decimals. Focusing mainly on place value, modeling decimals and fractions, and comparing decimals. Look for math homework Monday, Wednesday and Thursday this week.
Reading: Students read chapter 9 in The Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. Our target comprehension skills are: inferring and predicting, determining importance. Students respond to what they’ve read through oral discussions and journal writing. Students practice these skills by choosing and defending what they think is the most important sentence in each of these chapters.
Flat Stanley Project: I have started going through and grading the Flat Stanley Journals. I have been impressed by the quality, care and creativity I have seen so far. In class this week we will be working through the final entry which will also serve as a “writing assessment” using the skills we have worked on all year—topic sentences, supporting details, figurative language, conventions, and strong conclusions. The final entry will be self/peer-edited only. They will write rough drafts, then edit/revise their work before writing the final entry in their journals.
Spelling: There will not be a spelling test this week. The words for the May 31st spelling test will be sent home this Tuesday. These are all compound words.
Science: In the third lesson, students construct an explanation of how energy is stored, released, and transferred in chain reactions, such as falling dominoes. In the activity, Build a Chain Reaction, students are presented with an engineering design challenge to create their own chain reaction machine. Students experiment with a “Chain-Reaction Starter Kit.” This kit includes a lever and a ramp, which serve as the first two steps of a chain-reaction machine.
Social Studies: The––Washington State Features takes place Thursday, May 30th. This test also has an online practice site students can use to review as well. The students will have a word bank for the test.
